International Self-Care Day

Remember to put your oxygen mask on before assisting others! When we think about this phrase in the context of air travel, it emphasizes the importance of taking care of ourselves before tending to the needs of others. The same principle applies to our everyday lives, but it often gets neglected. In this fast-paced, demanding world, it’s easy to get so caught up in a whirlwind of work, activities and family obligations that often we forget to care for ourselves. June 24th is considered International Self Care Day and it designed to shed light on the importance of self-care and sharing tips to prioritize your wellbeing.

What is Self-Care

Self-care encompasses any intentional activity that nurtures your physical, mental or emotional wellbeing. This action is based on knowledge and information available to the individual and can also  occur in collaboration with healthcare professionals when needed (International Self Care Foundation, 2023).

Self-care is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance in one’s life and should not be considered selfish. Managing your health and wellbeing through self-care has many benefits including reducing stress, providing work life balance, improving life satisfaction and happiness, boosts immune system and lowers risk of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression (National Institute of Health, 2023).

Types of Self-Care

Self-care comes in many shapes and sizes. Self-care is not a one-size-fits-all type of activity. It may take trial and error to discover what type of self-care you need, enjoy and works best for you and lifestyle.

Types of self-care include:

Physical - exercise, balanced diet, taking a nap, staying hydrated
Mental - hobbies, reading a book, doing a puzzle
Emotional - journaling, seeing a therapist
Spiritual - engaging in prayer or worship, mediation, being in nature
Professional - taking scheduled breaks, saying no when your plate is full
Social - scheduling lunch with friends, date night, making time to call your mom

Conclusion

Create a self-care routine, reflect on areas of your life that require more attention. Identify what activities or practices bring you the most joy and add relaxation. Be sure to schedule regular self-care activities, then treat these activities as nonnegotiable appointments with yourself.

Remember that self-care is not about perfection or adding stress to your life, be kind to yourself and prioritize your wellbeing. You are investing in a happier, healthier you.
