Back To College Safety Tips

Campus safety is always a top priority when it comes to back to school. This year is slightly different because besides the normal security concerns, we have the coronavirus to worry about. To help keep the students and staff at Jackson College safe and healthy this fall, we’ve put together some tips to use if you are moving back to campus or if you are returning virtually.

Safety Tips for On-Campus In-Person Classes

Read and adhere to Jackson College’s reintegration plan for resuming classes. You will find important information about student/staff expectations, face covering requirements and the school’s COVID screening protocol.

Stock up on supplies make sure you have enough masks, hand sanitizer, hand soap for washing hands and cleaning supplies for your dorm room.

Be prepared to get tested if you start experiencing symptoms. The Jackson College Health Clinic located on campus is offering testing. For more information or if you think that you need testing you can call the Health Clinic at 517.990.1374. If you experience symptoms and the Health Clinic is not open, call MyCare Advice Line at 313.874.7500 and press 1 for Jackson County testing

Set expectations. If you are living in the dorms, talk to your roommates about how to make sure you are going to stay safe, clean your room and make sure you are physical distancing. Make sure these COVID-19 safety rules are agreed upon by all members of the room, so that expectations are set.

When in your dorm room or classroom, open a window if possible – this will help to increase ventilation and therefore reduce exposure.

Safety Tips for Remote Learning

Invest in good antivirus protection for your computer, this will protect your computer from viruses and hackers.

Keep everything updated - every time your computer or handheld device prompts an update, take the time and do it. Keeping your electronics up to date not only helps it function better but it can fix any security vulnerabilities.

Use unique passwords - remembering a bunch of different passwords can feel overwhelming but it could prevent someone from stealing your identity or logging into your active Zoom  meeting. Consider using a secure password manager to assist in remembering the passwords you have created, such as dashlane or lastpass.

Only connect to trusted Wi-Fi connections - there are a lot of free Wi-Fi connections available today, but use these with caution because this could put your electronic device at risk of being hacked.

Conclusion

Although this school year looks different from previous years, remember that this is only temporary and everyone can do their part to help get us through this tough time. Remember to continue wearing your mask, washing your hands, practice social distancing and taking care of yourself.
