The coronavirus is also known as COVID-19 and is a potentially severe illness that affects the respiratory tract. The outbreak initiated in Wuhan China but it continues to spread. Currently there are 14 confirmed cases in the United States, but there are no confirmed cases in Michigan (Henry Ford Allegiance Health, 2020).

With extensive media coverage, questions and concerns about COVID-19 are growing. To ensure that Jackson College has the most up-to-date information about this illness, this newsletter will provide a “what you need to know” about the coronavirus.

Symptoms

The severity of the illness has ranged from mild to severe and in some cases has caused death.

Symptoms include:

•Fever
•Cough
•Shortness of breath

Complications that can arise from the virus include pneumonia (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).

Prevention

Originally the COVID-19 virus emerged from an animal source. But now the virus is spreading from person to person.

Protect yourself by:

•Avoiding close contact with those who are sick
•Wash your hands often with soap and water
•Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands (CDC, 2020)

If you are sick, keep from spreading respiratory illnesses to others by:

•Staying home
•Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue
•Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently (CDC, 2020)

Recent Travel

If you were in China within the past 14 days and fell sick with a cough, fever or difficulty breathing, you should seek medical care. Before going to your medical care provider please call the facility to let them know of your recent travel and symptoms so that they can be equipped to care for you. The medical care facility will give you instructions on how to get care, without exposing others. Also, put on a face mask if possible.

Treatment

Currently, there is no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. Also, there is no specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. People infected with COVID-19 should receive supportive care to relieve symptoms.
