Tracking Physical Activity |
Inactivity can lead to a wide range of health and personal problems, including weight gain, fatigue, low productivity at school and work and even acute and chronic illness (Reiter, 2017). Fitness trackers have become extremely popular in recent years. Depending on the tracker, wearers can track steps, distance traveled, calories, stairs, heart rate and sleep patterns. So can these trackers combat inactivity? This newsletter will answer that question by establishing the benefits of using a fitness tracker. |
Having a daily record of how much or how little you are moving while wearing your fitness tracker can help change mindset and increase accountability. This awareness can help people find more ways to incorporate activity into their day, whether it is going to the gym, going for a walk or simply taking the stairs over the elevator. Research shows that those who wear fitness trackers can increase activity levels by 30 percent (Godman, 2015).

Personal and Group Motivation |
Fitness trackers track your goals and progress. This tracking can inspire you to walk more steps than you did yesterday (Health Fitness Revolution, 2015). Recording your daily activity or syncing the information can create social support as well. This network can foster a sense of competition, if that is what you need to push harder in your daily routine.
|
There are a number of different trackers available on the market. Some of the most popular trackers available are made by Fitbit, Garmin, Smart watches (Samsung or Apple), Jawbone and TomTom. The right tracker for you will be based on your price point, individual needs and your activity level. If you are looking for something to track just your steps you can opt for a cheaper tracker, in comparison to someone that is looking for something more extensive. |
Fitness trackers are not just for health benefits but for economic value as well. Some companies are using fitness trackers in their corporate wellness packages to promote healthy activity lifestyles among employees. For example, some employers have offered to reimburse the cost of the fitness tracker as part of their wellness program. Also, other employers have offered kick back pay to employees that sync their fitness trackers to prove that they have walked the encouraged 10,000 steps per day (Godman, 2015). |
Your body is made for movement! Unfortunately, more than half of the average American’s time awake is spent sitting (Godman, 2015). Fitness trackers are an option that may help you get moving, increase your motivation through feedback, get fit and maybe even lose weight. Bottom line, moving more and being more active is a great thing and can improve your overall health and well-being. In conclusion, fitness trackers are a popular way to track your progress and activity level. Increased activity can prevent and reverse many health issues. Fitness trackers may give you that extra boost of motivation you need to make a lifestyle change that can improve your overall health now and in the future. |
